Thirty-seven-year-old Daniel Spasic is a lover of Rockabilly music. In 2004 Daniel was travelling to TAFE at Richmond when he was involved in a car accident and acquired a brain injury.

Due to the injury, Daniel experiences painful muscle contractions in his hands. Daniel’s therapist recommended hand cycling exercises to keep these muscles active and prevent arm seizures.

A hand cycle would provide great benefits however Daniel could not access the equipment from his wheelchair. This created quite a challenge, and his carers, Lynn and Klaus began searching the internet for a solution. Fortunately, they found the TAD website and decided to ask for help.

Given Daniel’s mobility concerns, the family really appreciated how TAD volunteers Dick and Ray visited the family home to assess the situation. “Nothing was too much trouble. They were very friendly and caring,” says Lynn.

Dick and Ray were able to build a mounting device for the handcycle allowing it to fit comfortably into Daniel’s wheelchair. “It was very rewarding to see it working so effectively, when he gets going he does really well,” says Lynn.

When asked about their experience with TAD and if they had a message for others looking for support Lynn and Klaus said, “Don’t hesitate! They are prepared to do whatever it takes. They will try their best to accommodate your needs however they can.”
