Kyneen’s Freedom Wheels

At a special meeting in the Hunter Kyneen was presented with his very own Freedom Wheels bike thanks to the support of Aurizon’s Community Giving Fund.

Kyneen is a 7-year-old boy from Tarro living with Cerebral Palsy. His goal was to ride a bike independently. He had tried riding a standard bike but he struggled to keep his feet on the pedals and did not have the balance to maintain posture due to his condition.

Kyneen was referred to TAD’s Freedom Wheels by his personal physiotherapist and was assessed by TAD’s Occupational Therapist for a bike in May 2017.  The therapist prescribed a 24” Freedom Wheels bike with a back pedal brake, full toe clip support, custom handlebar and a medium hi-riser, which needed to be custom-built to suit his individual needs.

Not long after his assessment, Kyneen’s application for public funding was declined. TAD applied for a grant with Aurizon’s Community Giving Fund, which was successful, and Kyneen was re-assessed in March 2018 to check that he hadn’t outgrown his initial prescription.

Kyneen’s Freedom Wheels bike was built by TAD’s Hunter Volunteer Group and was presented to Kyneen and his family on Monday 30 April.

Kyneen is excited to finally start riding with his friends and family at the local park.

Solve-TAD acknowledges the traditional owners of country throughout Australia and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to them and their cultures and to elders past, present and emerging.
