Marley’s Freedom

10-year-old Marley is a determined, affectionate and social girl who loves to dance and swim.

Marley is living with Trisomy 5q24 and Monosomy 11q22 which has caused slow growth, intellectual and global developmental delay and heart conditions. As a result, this has affected her verbal and eating abilities.

Despite her condition, nothing ever stood in Marley’s way however she did have trouble riding a bike throughout her childhood.

I never thought she’d be able to ride an actual bike due to her balance not being great. Since our other two children have been able to ride, Marley has always missed out on that activity… She would sit in her stroller,” said mum, Shantelle.

Fortunately for Shantelle, a close friend and Marley’s Occupational Therapist had recommended Freedom Wheels to her, suggesting this will be ideal for Marley. “Seeing Marley on the trial bike was great. She was so happy the minute she sat on it!”

“The experience was very quick and easy. As Marley doesn’t have a long attention span, both our OT and the Freedom Wheels OT worked well and quickly together to make it as smooth and comfortable as possible for Marley,” said Shantelle when describing Marley’s assessment.

Seeing Marley ride her bike for the first time was a huge moment for Shantelle and the family.

“Marley was a bit apprehensive at first to get on her bike, but once she got on it, she was smiling and so happy. She finally has the freedom whilst riding! She now can finally ride with her brother and sister.”

When asked about her experience with Freedom Wheels, Shantelle said, “Freedom Wheels is something that can give them freedom and help them feel in control. Having a Freedom Wheels bike has given Marley the feeling of independence, confidence and fun! It’s definitely a wonderful experience for her.”
