Richard is an avid bowler aged 75-years-old.

More than 20 years ago, Richard suffered a stroke which resulted in paralysis on the right side of his body. A subsequent diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes caused complications in his left foot, affecting his balance.

Richard recently had his walker modified with two wider wheels at the front, but it was turned away at a number of bowling clubs. His wife, Dianne, said that it was devastating news for Richard as he realised that he may never play outside of his local club if he couldn’t find a solution to this unique challenge.

Fortunately, a local greenskeeper recommended TAD’s Bowls Australia-approved Green Safe Walker to Richard and Dianne. Richard was especially pleased to hear that TAD’s Green Safe Walker had special wheels that would not damage the greens and came with a sturdy seat for when he needs a rest in between games.

Dianne received a call from TAD with the news that Richard’s Green Safe Walker will be funded by the Aged Care Welfare Foundation. “When I got the call, I was shocked. I couldn’t believe it,” said Dianne. She had been worried that their financial circumstances would mean that Richard may need to hold off on getting back to bowling so this was welcoming news for both.

Richard took his Green Safe Walker out on the greens almost immediately after receiving it. He can now play up to three times a week and he’s working on getting back to playing competition. “He’s really happy. He can now get it down to the green and off he goes with it!” said Dianne. Richard happily shared that he can “play better bowls now”.

“The TAD’s walkers are such a fantastic idea. If we hadn’t known about it, Richard would only be playing bowls at his local club. But now with his Green Safe Walker from TAD, he can play on any greens.” “We’re so just over the moon that we got it and he’s so happy with it,” said Dianne.
